Off-topic: Telling it like it is…

I’m sitting here this morning in an empty office because all the permanent staff have been taken up to the fourth floor — the management floor — for a ‘briefing’.  It seems that the company has been taken over.  Everyone is terrified for their jobs, and rightly so.

I understand that the management have decided to give them all a glass of champagne; to “celebrate” the takeover, you understand.  Funny how people don’t imagine how others might be feeling.

  1. It is a shame you didn’t get any champagne!

Are you in danger of losing your job as well? The way you describe above it doesn’t sound like you are a permanent employee yourself. I looked at the blog’s about page to see but it was rather generic 🙂

  2. No, I’m just a hired hand, there for a few months. It’s what I do, a few months here and there; it gives me time to do other things, and (hopefully) earn enough to pay for them. Sort of like being a hired gunfighter. I ride into town and shoot up the saloon!

Funnily enough we ‘temporary’ staff are in much less danger than anyone else. We’re not “headcount”; we don’t feature in the company annual report as overhead. I’ve been brought in sometimes as temporary, and outlasted the ‘permanent’ guy who was being trained up to replace me!

  3. Companies are funny that way.

My plan for getting free time to do things is different than yours. I figure if I dig deep enough in my back yard I might find some oil. Then I’ll sell that, be rich, and be able to read as much as I want. We’ll see how that works out 🙂

  4. The right answer is to rob a bank, I think. If it works, then you take a flight to Rio. If it doesn’t, then at least you don’t have to worry about freezing to death this winter. 🙂
